Short description
Since 1810 the Istituto Veneto di Scienze Lettere ed Arti has been
one of the most important Italian institutes in the promotion and diffusion
of culture, research and knowledge.
The Institute has been based in Palazzo Loredan since 1891. The building
is prominently situated in Campo Santo Stefano, with two sides facing
on to the square, one stone-faced side, the other with an elegant multi-arched
window that characterises the entrance to the Institute. The building
was purchased by the Loredan family in 1536, and restructured in the
Renaissance style by Antonio Scarpagnino. Remnants of the original Gothic
building that belonged to the Mocenigo family are evident in the wall
towards the canal, the fifteenth-century gothic well-head at the entrance
and the stone arches on the late-Gothic capitals.
The library hosted by Istituto Veneto at Palazzo Loredan is of great
interest to researchers. It offers a catalogue of the Institute's publications
and the possibility to consult the Luigi Luzzattti Library catalogue
with its 16,000 titles among books and pamphlets, and the catalogue
of the seventeenth century works preserved in the institute's library.
